Frequently Asked Questions

What is Planning Poker?

Planning Poker (also called Scrum Poker) is a consensus-based estimation technique used by agile teams. Team members use numbered cards to vote on the effort required for a user story or task. Votes are revealed simultaneously to avoid anchoring bias, then the team discusses and re-votes if needed.

What is story point estimation?

Story point estimation is a way to measure the relative effort or complexity of work items. Instead of estimating in hours, teams assign abstract point values (usually from the Fibonacci sequence: 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13...) so the focus stays on relative size rather than absolute time.

Do participants need to sign up?

No. Participants can join any estimation session via a shared link without creating an account. Only the facilitator who creates the session needs a Story Estimate account.

What estimation scales are supported?

Story Estimate supports Fibonacci numbers (1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13...), T-shirt sizes (XS, S, M, L, XL), a TFB/NFC/1 scale, and fully custom values — so you can use whatever scale your team prefers.

Is Story Estimate free?

Sessions with up to 6 participants are free — no account needed for anyone. For larger teams, the facilitator needs a subscription ($11/month); teammates still join without paying or signing up. One subscription covers unlimited sessions and unlimited participants.

How is disagreement calculated?

After votes are revealed, Story Estimate computes the coefficient of variation across all numeric votes and classifies the result as LOW, MEDIUM, or HIGH disagreement — helping the team decide whether to discuss further before re-estimating.
